Aside from equipment, Cebuano software engineers develop
software to teach languages and provide other "edutainment"
programs. Dado Montano, head of the graphic design department
of Booom Interactive, inc. in Mandaue City, said they are making
e-learning modules for Japanese firms, which sell these compact
disc-based or web-based tutorials on how to use Microsoft Word,
Microsoft XP and other applications. The Japan University is one
of the institutions using Booom products. The tutorials contain not
only graphics and voice instructions but also animation and
simulation of the applications, he added. The company also
creates interactive catalogues and company multimedia presentations
for firms like Japan Airlines, Panasonic, Nippon Telegraph and
Telephone Corp., Casio Co. Ltd. and Nissan Motors Co. Ltd.
Aside from creating instructional materials on computer applications,
Booom's engineers have also created products that teach how to
write Kanji, or Japanese characters, to grade school students.
Booom was set up by a Japanese businessman as Japan Media
Programming-Cebu in 1997. It has since created 10 computer
games for the merchandising company Sanrio. We cater to our
clients' needs, and usually, we translate their ideas into graphic
designs. But sometimes, they come without any ideas at all, so
that requires a lot of creativity on our part," Montano said.
